Last week I blogged about my must have geek products and it was awesome to share them with everyone. I got so many questions about my jewelry that I decided to connect with Jill, the creator of Geek Girl Accessories and interview her about why she does what she does....and also give you guys a little surprise....so make sure you read all the way to the end ;)
How and why did you start Geek Girl Accessories?
Jill: I have been making portrait and memorial jewelry for about 3 1/2 years and one day in the summer of 2013, my 10 year old daughter wanted a Superman pendant. We looked everywhere for something she liked and even with Man of Steele being in theaters, nothing was her style. We love going to antique stores as a family and my husband is a comic geek, and I saw a Superman comic from the 60's with beautiful graphics. I asked him if it was worth anything and he said no, then Maddie's eyes lit up when she saw one particular scene. It hit me, why not upcycle comics into timeless pieces of wearable art! It's grown from there, and I use comics, books, magazines, gaming cards and I even have some beautiful original Doctor Who fan art.
What are your favorite geekery things?
Jill: I LOVE Doctor Who (Matt Smith is my favorite "NuWho" and Tom Baker is my favorite classic Who) and Sherlock, Wolverine and the X-Men story lines and Lord of the Rings. Creating anything with those themes makes me smile and I have a hard time not keeping the one-of-a-kind pieces I make.
What is your favorite piece you ever made?
Jill: One of the girls that won an art contest that I held last year is a 16 year old that has grown up in foster care on the west coast. Doctor Who was a character she connected with and the show helped her through some tough times. She won credit to my shop and bought some various Doctor Who pieces, but I made a piece of jewelry in a different pendant blank with her TARDIS art and added it in to her package. She loved it and was able to wear her own amazing art!
What is something you are day dreaming about creating?
Jill: I would love to create a more fun geeky/sci-fi quote stamped pieces to add with my upcycled comic pieces, for that beautiful layered look. I happened upon some vintage British pennies at an antique shop in the next town over and have had a great time with them. I think they look amazing and are definitely not your average stamped metal piece.
My Harry Potter Necklace was created with one of the British pennies Jill speaks of above, and it is stunning!
So now lets get to fun stuff!
Jill has created a one of kind of necklace honoring the amazing Leonard Nimoy!
I am totally jealous of the piece by the way ladies and gents ;)
With his passing last week the trekkie world is heart broken! I am so thrilled Jill created this piece, it is stunning and I can't wait to see who wins it!
